Is It Really August Already?

This morning, when I set down to my desk to get started for the day, I had a shocking realization: it’s August. I know I should have noticed it was coming—and, frankly, we finished off our July/August issue of AGRR quite a while ago. I thought I had gotten used to how quickly time passes these days, but for some reason, this one threw me. It not only means soon I’ll have to allow a few extra minutes for my drive to work, thanks to all the school buses I’m sure I’ll meet on my way, but it also means the fall show season is soon to come, too.

And, though I am excited about the season premier of “The Office,” that’s not the show season to which I’m referring.

I’m actually referring to the upcoming Auto Glass Week in Las Vegas—which is just three short months away from this coming week. In the last few weeks, I’ve been working on a preview of the Auto Glass Technician Olympics™ and the Windshield Repair Olympics™ with a bit of a different spin. I’ve been talking to past winners of the events, trying to find out how their winnings have affected their work and their businesses. Those I’ve talked to have given a variety of responses, from “I’m able to use [my past win] in my advertising” to “I find that insurance companies react favorably to this position” to “It helps me explain to a customer how I can do the job well.” (CLICK HERE to view a video of last year's competitions.)

Unfortunately, time doesn’t allow me to get to every single past contestant—but I’d like to conduct a semi-informal poll here.

- How many of you are planning to attend Auto Glass Week in Las Vegas?
- How many of you plan to compete in either the AGTO or WRO?
- And, finally, for those who have competed in the past, what advice would you give to others? What have you taken away from the competition that you’d like to share with future contestants?

I look forward to hearing from you. Please e-mail me at pstacey@glass.com.
